April 10, 2015 – Kansas City, Mo., – Caring for a patient that weights 1,000 lbs may seem like it would be a rare occurrence, but given the national obesity trends in the United States it’s all too common in hospitals and at home. Today, Sizewise is working with the Humana (NYSE: HUM) network subscribers to offer prescribed durable medical equipment that is designed for bariatric and/or geriatric patients that need something more than standard-sized beds, mattresses, and mobility equipment. An estimated 17.5 million Humana subscribers will have access to this specialized set of Sizewise products.”

According to the CDC, more than one-third of older adults aged 65 and over is obese. Obesity prevalence was higher among those aged 65-74 compared with those aged 75 and over in both men and women. By 2050, the number of U.S. older adults, defined as persons aged 65 and over, is expected to more than double, rising from 40.2 million to 88.5 million.

For Humana and Sizewise, the increasing healthcare service needs and costs continue to skyrocket for both the aging and obese populations. Humana and Sizewise will help to address these unique needs by offering products that are made in the USA, which is critical to the quality and integrity of the product to withstand patient weights of 1,000 lbs.

“As baby boomers continue to age and their needs increase, the demand for safe and secure home care equipment is rising,” said Sizewise Director of Homecare/ Continuum of Care John Dopita. “Humana’s inclusive approach to health coverage is not only inspiring, but essential to ensuring the proper care for each patient across the continuum from hospital to home. Sizewise is proud to be a participating provider for the Humana network.”

Once a physician uncovers a need for equipment, a Humana member can order the appropriate product and Sizewise will ship, assemble and train the patient with the equipment, billing Humana directly. The only financial responsibility for the patient is any deductible or coinsurance payments specified in the particular network plan.

Humana subscribers will have access to this benefit effective immediately.
