LENEXA, Kan., Apr. 2, 2019 – Several new product features and options have been added to the industry first Behavioral Health Bed™ and its counterpart, the Behavioral Health Bed – Platform™. The innovations come as acute hospitals and behavioral health facilities continue to look for ways to limit ligature risk within their care settings.
“The Joint Commission® and other accreditation organizations have made suicide prevention a top priority,” said Brad Frickey, Sizewise Chief Operating Officer. “Our two behavioral health beds have always been designed to be anti-ligature or ligature-resistant. But we also know that innovation of our product features is never done.”
Recent Behavioral Health Bed™ innovations include:
- Redesigned head and footboards which further limit ligature points (standard on new build beds, and available upgrade for existing beds)
- Optional pedal lock kit, to prevent the wheels from rolling
New design options for Behavioral Health Bed – Platform™ include:
- Low profile head and footboard option
- Optional pedestal assembly which allows for a patient lift to be used
“We know that BH patient needs are not one-size-fits-all,” said Frickey. “We’re committed to providing a range of options for dual diagnosis patients, as well as patients of every behavioral health acuity level. And we expect continued innovation in the future.”
The first generation Behavioral Health Bed™ was the result of a unique collaboration between Sizewise and clinicians at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics (UIHC). Behavioral health nurses identified a need and worked alongside Sizewise designers to develop a fully electric medical bed to support clinical as well as safety needs—the first of its kind on the market.
The bed was honored by Vizient, Inc.’s Innovative Technology Exchange in 2016. Today, Behavioral Health Bed™ and Behavioral Health Bed – Platform™ are used by accredited facilities nationwide.
